Portuguese V. Fernandes wins women's triathlon

(Beijing, September 15) The "Good Luck Beijing" 2007 Beijing BG Triathlon World Cup opened this morning at the Changping Triathlon Venue at the Ming Tombs Reservoir. World's No. 1 Vanessa Fernandes of Portugal scored 34:16.00 to win the running event and the overall title in the women's division with a three-event total time of 2:00:35.00. China's Xing Lin finished the running in 38:20.00 to place 17th with a total time of 2:04:32.00.
Running is the last of the three events for a triathlon competition. Needless to say, after 1.5-kilometer swimming and 40-kilometer cycling, the 10-kilometer run would be a great challenge to the athletes' physical ability. It is often the case that those who show their superb staying power in the running would eventually come out on top in a triathlon tournament.
Vanessa Fernandes, who followed the others in the two previous events of swimming and cycling, began to show her strength in the run, leading in the group throughout the race and leaving the runner-up by such a wide margin as 1min and 6secs.
Emma Snowsill of Australia came home in 32:22.00 to place second with a total time of 2:01:51, followed by Laura Bennett of the United States in 35:50 for the run and 2:02:06.00 for all the three events.
