New Zealander Kris Gemmell wins men's cycling
(Beijing, September 16) The men's division of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2007 Beijing BG Triathlon World Cup opened this morning at the Changping Triathlon Venue at the Ming Tombs Reservoir. In the second stage of competition of cycling, Kris Gemmell of New Zealand came out on top in a time of 59 minutes.
Placing second and third respectively were Lvan Rana of Spain and Hunter Kempet of the USA.
In the triathlon the time spent on changing from one event to another is also accounted so the results can be improved if the athlete uses less time in the event changing zone. In today's competition Andy Potts of the USA, the winner in swimming, was surpassed by the runner-up in the swimming Hirokasu Tayama of Japan in the event changing zone. So Hirokasu Tayama was the first to start in the cycling race.
In cycling, triathletes are to ride five laps along the course for the 40-kilometer event. After the first lap, No. 38, Colin Jenkins of Canada, led the leader group represented by hot favorites Javier Gomez, Sinom Whitfield and Brad Kahlefeldt.
No.8 seed of the event Tim Don of Britain withdrew after two and half laps.
World's No. 1 Javier Gomez only ranked 28th after five laps and Kris Gemmell of New Zealand took the leading position in the last lap and eventually came out on top to win the event.
